STOCK VS. GRUPPEM INTAKE DYNO COMPARISON:
Stock intake whp: 341.9 @ 7500 rpm GruppeM intake whp: 361.1 @ 7500 rpm
Stock intake trq: 296.7 lb-ft @ 3700 rpm GruppeM intake trq: 306.2 lb-ft @ 3700 rpm
Peak Gains: 21.5 whp @ 8300 rpm, 15.1 lb-ft @ 6700 rpm*
*Average gain of 15.3 whp and 12.4 lb-ft of torque from 4500-8500 rpm
Dyno acceleration, 3000-8300 rpm, 3rd gear :
stock intake: 8.66-sec GruppeM intake: 8.38-sec*
*this gain, despite the 6F hike in dyno room temperature.
DYNO TEST NOTES:
With an ambient temperature 6F cooler during baseline testing, the coolant and oil temperatures were kept the same during testing (195F and 205F, respectively) . This kept ignition timing values the same, which were also monitored using an OBD2 scan tool. There was one run where the intake made 362.5whp but it was left out because the coolant and oil temps were 10F cooler than the baseline test (the pull was in effort to bring the fluid temps back up after a cool-down). The highest baseline run is shown here. Both intake setups received between 10-13 runs to draw out any ECU adaption.Given very similar fluid temps for accuracy between runs, the GruppeM intake still lowered the intake-air temperature by a consistent 8F, even though the ambient temp in the dyno room was up 6F by then.
60-120MPH TEST:
Stock intake: 10.9-sec GruppeM intake: 10.6-sec
NOTES:
Third to fourth gear pulls were used for best accuracy and ease of repetition, and each setup got two runs, which ended up identical. Runs were performed in the same 64F ambient weather with 196F coolant and 208 oil temps (the typical and fairly consistent highway-cruising temp for this car in this weather), on the exact stretch of flat road with the exact same starting point. GPS-based Performance VBox was used for testing.
Unlike when stopped, on the dyno, or cruising at low speed, like in most high performance cars the RS4′s stock air box does an excellent job at keeping intake-air temp low–only 11-12F above ambient–while at highway speed. Still, the GruppeM setup showed a consistent improvement by 3F. This goes to show that, while stopped or cruising at low speed, the carbon fiber GruppeM air box keeps IAT cooler and takes longer to heat up than the factory plastic air box, and heat-soak is more prevalent with the stock setup. Lastly, there is a new, unmistakable V8 roar coming out of the engine bay at wide-open throttle with the GruppeM intake. And unlike some intake systems, where it’s only noticeable at high rpm, this new tune is noticeable through the entire rev range.
